The Practice

Sam Buchanan

"All photographs are an autobiographical document of the maker… most are limited in how much information they disclose."

Jesse Alexander

Much of Sam's practice focuses on human health — specifically how modern life impacts our physical and mental wellbeing. Her work combines digital and analogue photography with her own medical imagery, and experiments with introducing an element of unpredictability into the work, echoing the role of chance in health itself.

Alongside this, she works with inherited archive materials — glass negatives and colour slides — exploring photography's capacity to hold memory and bear witness to lives that might otherwise be lost.

Sam completed her MA in Photography at Falmouth University in 2023, gaining a Distinction. She has recently returned to Falmouth as a postgraduate researcher, exploring a re-imagining of medical photography and the potential for positively impacting human health.
